How Athletes in Southeast Missouri Are Using Float Therapy to Recover Faster
Heavy training schedules and weekend tournaments take a toll. Here's how local athletes are adding one more tool to the recovery toolbox.

Between travel teams, two-a-days, weekend tournaments and a school schedule on top of all of it, athletes across Southeast Missouri are training harder and recovering less than ever. Floating has quietly become part of how some of them are closing that gap, and it has nothing to do with which sport you play.
The recovery problem is the same in every sport
Whatever the sport, the underlying issue is identical: hard training leaves the body with metabolic byproducts and micro-damage that need time and the right conditions to clear. Most athletes get the training right and the recovery wrong, not from lack of effort, but because real recovery tools (ice baths, massage, extra sleep) all take time most schedules don't have.
An hour of floating compresses a lot of that recovery into one session. In controlled research, a single float after intense exercise significantly lowered blood lactate and perceived pain compared with passive rest, and a study of 60 elite athletes found floating reduced perceived muscle soreness and improved mood following training. The full research is here.
It's also a mental edge
The part that surprises people is the mental side. Sport psychologists have known for decades that vivid mental rehearsal, visualization, improves real performance, and a landmark study found that combining guided imagery with floatation-REST improved actual performance significantly more than imagery alone, both in objective scoring and in blind coaches' ratings. In a float tank, with the body completely still and nothing competing for attention, that kind of rehearsal becomes vivid in a way it rarely is anywhere else. More on mental rehearsal →
What this looks like in practice
For athletes training across Southeast Missouri, the float tends to fit in one of a few places: the evening after a long meet or tournament, when the body needs to reset before the next day's events; during a heavy training block, as a once-a-week reset that keeps soreness from compounding; or the week of a big competition, for the visualization benefit as much as the physical one.
None of this requires being an elite athlete. The same recovery mechanisms apply whether you're training for a state meet, a travel league, or just trying to keep up with two sports in the same season.
Built by someone who's lived it
Float 42 co-founder Bobby Brewer is a USA National Champion and ten-time USA National Team swimmer who spent his career studying recovery and performance, which is part of why the athletic side of this isn't an afterthought. If you're a coach or parent interested in team rates or building floats into a season plan, reach out, and the Pure Float Membership at $79 a month is built for exactly this kind of routine use.
